"Ben, please," she whispered, her voice calm but urgent. "Let's go back inside. I have to prepare for tomorrow's lesson."

Benjamin hesitated for a moment, his eyes flickering between Carole and Ruby. But finally, he nodded, taking Abigail's hand and leading her back inside the schoolhouse. Ruby followed close behind, her heart racing with fear.

The crowd outside continued to shout and yell but t didn't approach the school, and for that, Ruby was grateful.

Ruby spent the rest of the afternoon preparing for the next day's lesson, her mind racing with possibilities on how to make the classroom even more engaging. Benjamin patiently listened as she re-lived every little thing that happened in great detail. She heard footsteps outside and looked up to see the Reverend Walker standing in the doorway, his face grave.

"What is it?" Ruby asked, her heart pounding in her chest. She instinctively reached for Benjamin, who moved close to comfort her.

Benjamin took a deep breath before speaking. "I just spoke with the sheriff. He said that Carole Arlington isn't the only one who is against the school. There are others in town who are spreading rumors and trying to stir up trouble."

Ruby felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead. Ben wrapped his arm around her shoulder and squeezed her gently. She had known that not everyone would be accepting of the school, but she hadn't anticipated this level of opposition so soon. They thanked Reverend Walker for the news, and he left, saying Alma and the children would be looking for him.

"What are we going to do?" She asked, her voice shaking slightly.

Benjamin pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly. "We'll figure it out together."
